In Part 1 last week, I provided background context for how the punishment bureaucracy has used its own failures to get low-information people who feel bad about overt state violence to support various “reforms.” The key point: the “reforms” sanctioned by powerful bureaucrats do not challenge the size or power of the punishment bureaucracy, and almost always
Thank you. I see the same thing when I look at the enormous U.S. military with a presence all over the world and a budget of $800+ Billion. That must be the country’s largest output of wealth and effort. Not for schools or water or food or healthcare. The mainstream (corporate) media never questions it or looks critically. Then I look at my own city where the PD has the largest share of the budget. Not for schools or water or healthcare. Huge money-making on the backs of the citizenry at all levels of government. Of course dissent must be squelched. If we were truly a country for the people would the people choose lethal weaponry locally or nationally at the expense of clean water? 38 prisons in my state and 5 in one county alone. Lots of people making a living off caging people. Over 2000 sworn officers (counting each municipal PD--because each municipality has its own) in a county with only 241 land miles. Lots of people making a living off of controlling the population, so profit making in not interrupted. These systems need to be dismantled not reformed. And the NYT is at this moment reporting that Biden’s home is being searched for misplaced paperwork. And people are low-information--you are right. I am amazed at how many don’t know their local representatives or how their municipality is organized (city, village, town ?). Of course I was the same. I became aware only after I got off the treadmill of work with retirement. When I finally had the time (another thing profit makers don’t want you to have enough of). The politicians don’t help their constituents understand. They do the very least to keep their jobs with their great benefits and support the blue who will help control dissent. They are at heart contemptuous of their constituents as are the police. To be otherwise--to be concerned about them--takes a lot of effort and hard work. The kind of hard work you are doing. Thanks again.
